LA VILLA MARRAKECH

As in all cities, getting around Marrakech by car is not easy, and walking is the only way to discover the medina.
Walking is the best way to appreciate all the magic of this city: its smells, its colours, its thousands of little shops, its noise.
Here is a selection of places to see, easily accessible on foot from LA VILLA MARRAKECH.

THE KASBAH

Located in the heart of the medina, this royal district is an attraction in itself. Most people get around here on foot, as the streets are often too narrow for cars. There are echoppes and small traditional shops.

The medina of Marrakech is surrounded by 18km of fortified ramparts dating back to the 12^th century.

THE GATES

Monumentales, on les appelle BAB. There are 19 of them dotting the ramparts.
One of the most famous, certainly due to the fact that it is one of the most elaborate, is that of BAB AGNOU at the entrance to the kasbah.

the kasbah mosque

Also known as the Moulay El Yazid Mosque, the Mansouria Mosque, the Laqab Mosque (named after its founder) or the Golden Apple Mosque, it was built between 1185 and 1190. Along with the Koutoubia Mosque, it is one of the most important historic mosques in Marrakech.

the saadian tombs

They form a historic royal necropolis and date from the time of the Saadian dynasty and in particular the reign of Ahmad al-Mansur (1578-1603). They are located immediately south of the Kasbah mosque. A must-see.

El Badi Palace

An ancient architectural masterpiece from the Saadian era, all that remains today is an immense esplanade of gardens planted with orange trees and surrounded by high walls. It was emptied of its riches in order to build the imperial city of Meknes.

Tinsmiths' square

A pretty square linking the old Jewish quarter of the Mellah to the old Islamic quarters of the city. Here you will find small stalls where craftsmen make their objects using traditional skills and different metals.

The Agdal Gardens

They touch the Dar El Makhzen palace. The first trees were planted in the 12^th century by the Almohads. They are irrigated by several reservoirs fed by water from the High Atlas.

BAHIA Palace

Built at the end of the 19^th century, it showcases the best of Moroccan and Islamic architecture, with meticulously decorated rooms, lush gardens and vast courtyards.

The Koutoubia mosque

Built in the 12th century, it is considered an important example of Almohad architecture and Moroccan mosque architecture. Its 77-metre-high minaret is richly decorated.

Jemaa el Fna square

In english "square of the mosque of the deceased". A veritable court of miracles at the gateway to the souks of Marrakech, it is one of Morocco's main traditional and historic tourist attractions and an iconic location in the world of cinema.

The souks

The souks are a veritable labyrinth of stalls and craft workshops, organised by district and by trade, bringing together more than 2,600 Moroccan craftsmen in around twenty guilds. The main souk starts north of the famous Jemaa el-Fna square.
